We were thrilled to have a group of kids come out this past weekend to help pull an engine from a 1970 Mustang.

If you are a gearhead, then you know that pulling an engine is a right of passage for any mechanic. Scratch this one off the list boys, you’re now proper gearheads!

Our patient is a 1970 Mustang with a small block Ford 302 that was hurting pretty bad. We found it had nearly 80% leakage loss on the #5 piston (coming from the rings).
So out she comes!

Our workspace for this event was the very-very cold Chicago garage…the kids were absolute troopers. Still, we’re moving this to the Trade Collective where we can work in a heated and clean space.
The rebuild plan is fairly modest. We are not gunning for some kind of ultimate-this-is-the-best- ever sort of build, and this will not be the final engine to go into this car. Bigger plans are in order (much bigger), but that will have to wait for a few years. We just want to refresh the engine, learn cool stuff along the way, and have fun in the meantime.
Still, while we’ve got it out, we have some tasty upgrades planned to wake the little mill up.

Follow along as we rebuild this engine. We’ll host a Tear Down Party in a couple weeks. Come on out and join us! The donuts are on us.
